Me and the Palm Pre

This little Palm Pre is actually quite nice. Some of the UI elements aren’t as obvious as the iPhone, but the phone itself is beautiful, the mobile browser is very impressive, and the apps that are available are nifty (though these are limited). The 3 mega pixel camera takes fantastic photos, though I can’t compare it against the quality of the new iPhone. As for the keyboard, I’ve actually grown accustomed to the iPhone’s touch version, so the Palm’s physical one is actually a bit of a nausence.

To be honest, if the Pre had video I would totally buy it…just to stick it to AT&T (who seems hell bent on sticking it to me). I’ve been an AT&T customer for years now, and my bill, which includes a mobile broadband plan, is upwards of $200 month. I don’t think I should be penalized for buying the latest and greatest phones that keep me locked in to using their service. If anything they should want me to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS for the $199/$299 prices, because now that I can’t, I’m definitely interested in going elsewhere for better service.

As it stands, if I can upgrade on 7/12 (the you “may be eligible” language gives me pause), then I’ll buy the new iPhone. In the meantime, I’m going to keep playing with this Pre and keep my eyes peeled for new Android phones. Competition is better for the consumer after all. :)
